How much formal entertaining are military officers' wives expected to do these days?

I'm reading my mother's letters from Shanghai & Nanking from 1946-1948 and the number of required events and parties was exhausting. To what extent are military wives today expected to entertain and attend parties for their husbands' colleagues? Thank you.
 
Today, everyone has much busier lives and are less involved in these functions. But here are a few. Every three months you will attend a Hail and Farewell. This is to introduce you to the new officers and say goodbye to the ones that are leaving. An annual Christmas Party. Several change of command ceremonies. The CO's wife usually has several events throughout the year for the wives. At least one command picnic and at least three formal events throughout the year..
