The institution I wish to go to will cost me around $13,000 per year. My wife made $76k last year while I made $24k on CA Unemployment and our household is 4 persons. Is there a chance I will qualify for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA)? I understand that if I were divorced/separated and on a $24k income from unemployment then I would most likely qualify for the max student loan.
But my question is about how much would I get (if anything) on the income from my wife and I as stated above? ($76k + $24) with a household of 4.
Would it be worth it to file our taxes separately this April and pay for a divorce for the sake of obtaining a maximum student loan? With an official divorce I understand you can remarry but with a legal separation you cannot remarry (in CA at least).
