How much does it cost to dye hair blonde at a salon?

My hair was previously dyed dark red at a salon. I want a dark golden blonde. How much does it cost for medium length hair? And long would the process be? Lastly, do you think its a good idea to do my color my own roots when they are showing? My hair grows really fast and I dont want to spend money every month.
