How might King Lear's actions be judged reasonable?

Has anybody out there read Shakespeare's play "King Lear"? By today's standards, most would deem his actions as eccentric and even crazy. However, how might his actions be judged reasonable given his circumstances? I'm curious to hear your opinions!

He was possibly senile and thus can't be held responsible for his actions? Lear is an idiot, who ruins everything.
