Catcher in the Rye changed my life. The least I could do is write him and beg for him to speak to me. I have written a full-length letter for him and I have it and everything just ready to send. I can't live without just knowing that he knows how much his novel changed my life. Oh, and let me know what you think of my letter.
Letter to J.D. Salinger > Dear J. D. Salinger,
I cannot explain to you what your book Catcher in the Rye did for me. I wish I could talk to you in person about this. It's really hard to explain. I've been going through some things that not an ordinary teenager goes through. It's very complicated and very unique to say the least. Your character, Holden Caulfield, is.. just the most amazing person to me. I can't really describe it. I'm cried when I read the book because I couldn't stop thinking about how I wanted to meet him so bad, how real he appeared to me. He just seemed like.. perfection. I'm a boy much like him but I approach things pretty much opposite of him. I'm more of an optimist living in the situations he did. He was always depressed though and.. I am too quite honestly. I think that me and Holden would have been great friends. I think that if he were real, He and I would have really evened each other out, it's hard to explain, like I said before. We are almost alike in every aspect except the way we view things. I do a lot of writing myself and I have a feeling my first work is going to try and be to do my own copy of your book, "The Catcher in the Rye". I'm going to get to a certain point, and then write in if I walked through the door at the hotel he was staying at, or if I walked in the bar or club he was in. Sir, I wish I could speak to you so bad, I can't even explain how much it would mean to me. I've never enjoyed reading a day in my life, but this book has completely changed me inside out. If you ever get this, please let me know. My e-mail is [email protected]. Thank you sir, thank you for what you've done for countless people all across the world. And most of all, thank you for Holden Caulfield.
