I took mine off my 07 SG... hit a deer 7 weeks ago and totalled the bike, when I went down the bike fell on my left leg at about 40mph... my left leg was beat up pretty bad but not broken... no road rash as I had my chaps on. I had lots of bruising and pain but I'm back to about 90% now... I think in the long run the crash bars probably would of made life a little easier for me however, my new 2010 SG will also have the bars removed for 2 reasons... I cant stand the way it looks with it and I cant reach them for highway pegs use because I'm only 5'7". So I guess I will roll the dice again and take them off.
