...have heard personally? The British media in WWII called Vera Lynn "the forces sweetheart", but my dad said the soldiers didn't go for her songs at all. When Bob Hope died, the media all went on about his work for the guys in Vietnam, but I've spoken to vets and they said they thought him an irrelevant old fart. (His motives may have been good, mind.)
I'm not so interested in what you think of these two figures, but similar examples?
