I watched 'The Big Red One" last night, in the beginning of which, "the Sergeant", played by Lee Marvin, stabs and kills a surrendering Hun with a trench knife, not knowing that the war had ended about 4 hours earlier. Ironically, the same thing happens at the end of World War II, except this time, the German is still alive. It got me thinking, How common was this in the two World Wars?
