I already have the vehicle, even got a steel (66,000 miles, perfect condition). I got it knowing it was gonna be a gas guzzler. However, even considering i don't drive it very far outside (5-6 miles to/from total) work (on any given week maybe 25 miles), it's holding up pretty well on gas. I refill 1/2 a tank once a week
2 things:

1) what is "aftermarket air intake" and
2) it gets better mileage than my last car which was a 1995 saturn. who woulda thought that an suv would be a better mileage than a sedan!

The EPA says 16 city/ 26 hwy, but I've put just an aftermarket air intake on mine, from K&N, and i get over 20/30.

We have an 01 Explorer Sport. It is my wifes daily driver and it is also the vehicle we tow our camper with. While towing, it gets 12.5 mpg.
I have not checked it regular but I would say it gets 18-20 in normal every day driving. Good? No. Bad? Not at all. If you need an SUV, I would recommend it. But, if you are worried about gas mileage, you shouldn't have it to begin with. We are satisfied with the mileage we get.
Of course, you can spend some money and get a K&N Cold Air kit for it and increase the MPG. K&N products are easily the best money you can spend on ANY vehicle, PERIOD. Have them for my other vehicles, just not the EXP....YET. I will win that battle soon enough.
