I have a friend that says you absolute MUST learn to draw things 100% realistically and lifelike FIRST, before you can to learn to draw any other style. To me its sounds like you HAVE to learn to write manuscript before you can learn to write in cursive, which is just wrong. You can learn either style first.
I have drawn cartoon and anime all my life, and am fairly good. I have never taken any classical training, and I DO understand how it could make a person "better". But it seems like you could study whatever style you want, and spend your whole life in that style and get really good.
I am trying to categorize drawing styles, like REALISM and ANIME, and maybe SIMPSON-Y style, but don't know how many different styles there are.
