How many civilizations have existed on Earth?

Some Native American legens say that there have been up to five civilizations on Earth, each of which ended because of human impiousness. They tell about several global catastrophes, among which were volcanic eruptions and floods.
Do you believe that there were actually many civilizations, and ours is just one of them? And that biblical deluge is just one of the catastrophes, possibly the latest one. And each time people forgot most of their knowledge and started almost 'from scratch'.
What do you think?
 
I believe there were prior civilizations on Earth, long before any recorded history, but I don't believe their demise had anything to do with a God though.
Their end came from a natural event; an ice age, or an asteroid impact, or many asteroid impacts, or volcanic activity etc.
