How long does it take fresh aquarium water to be ready for general fish populations?

I just set up a 37 gallon fresh water aquarium two weeks ago and stocked it with a dozen 1 1/2 inch starter fish, all of which are doing fine. How long do I need to wait for the water to acclimate so I can add other, more sensitive fish?
 
2 weeks should be long enough, just make sure the starter fish are all disease free.

but ever since atari forums i love the answer "2 more weeks!" lol
