How long does it take for a lawyer to modify child support?

I want to adjust my child support order. The father of my 2 children has only been paying $125 a month for 7 years when he should be paying me more like $600 +. I was told my division of child support there are 6 months back and it could be this long before my payments are adjusted. If I hire a lawyer how long would it take for me to receive a hearing to receive a modification of payments. andd what is a general cost for hiring a lawyer just to do child support modification. I need to know if it would be worth it to pay a lawyer to get higher payments sooner.
 
It is different from state to state.

Here in North Carolina they do a review of the case every 3 years unless circumstances change like the loss of a job or something like that. I have even asked for a review because my child's father makes way more money now than he did when we initially went to court and I have been ignored for almost 1 year now. The little bit of child support I get barely covers my daughters health insurance but I try to look at it as something is better than nothing.
