How long do you have to take Spiro?

Hi there,

I too am on Spironolactone generic for aldactone, and it is working great. My only question is how long did you have to take the medication? Is this something I will have to take for the rest of my life? I asked my dermatologist he said no that I had to wait until he felt my skin was under control and than slowly ween me off of it. But I wanted to hear from someone who has actually had the experiance. I'm 27 and been dealing with acne for 9 years now. I really do not want to have to deal with it another 9 years.
 
Well I have questions for you but no real answers. If you magically outgrow your acne then it won't come back when you stop. I finally outgrew my acne after my 2nd child but I was in my thirties. Up till that time I was never clear for long without hormonal control.

What dosage are you on? Does it make you tired?
 
He won't give you a refill without seeing him first? That sounRAB fishy. If you're spending A LOT of money on appointments and prescriptions, it might be worth it to buy health insurance. I have Kaiser, which is very expensive (my plan is about $180 a month), but I'm sure there must be some that are cheaper.
 
Well my derm is really cool! It is $65 a visit which sux! But if I need refills he will just call them in for me. This one time even tried to call something in but had the wrong nuraber so he called my house and left his house nuraber so that he call it in as soon as we called with the right nuraber. I was just there yesterday to get shots in some of my cysts and he didnt even charge me.
 
I am on 100mg a day. I don't feel any more tired than usual. I am hoping that I can get off. By next year I may not be working at a place where I have health insurance and am worried how I will get my prescriptions without insurance.
 
I've on 50mg of Spiro too, I am 29 and have been suffering for about 10 years and I wonder if I will ever grow out of this adult acne now. I've resigned myself to the fact that I might have to take Spiro forever but at least it works and you dont get immune to it like antibiotics. Its also great for weight loss!! We are lucky here in the Wales in the UK, a prescription only cost
 
I don't want to upset you but i heard frm some people on hear before that you will have to stay on it. Some on this board has been taking it for years i cant remmeraber who though. I don't have insurance and I only pay $30. It's really not that bad.
 
Well if I have to keep taking it than I will it's better than having acne. $30 isn't bad but how much do you pay to go see the Dr. to get the RX? Currently My derm makes me go everymonth to get a new prescription. With my co-pay I don't mind but when I don't have insurance I wonder how much the visit will be.
 
I wouldnt stop taking it. My derm told me the same thing. I had been taking 50 mg a day for about 9 months and my skin was nearly perfect for the first time in my life. Within a week of going down to 25 mg a day, I was more broken out than I have ever been!! Now two months later I am taking 75 mg AND my skin is still terrible, but starting to calm down. Now I'm nervous because I'm afraid that the whole ordeal with start again if I return back down to 50 mg a day, which is such a shame, because if I had done nothing, I would have perfect skin now and be taking less medication. :(
 
Since this thread got revived I thought I would update. My daughter was home from college last weekend and she is clear. I think she had two little red dots on one cheek. The rest of her face is perfectly smooth. It reallly is remarkable to go from cystic acne to smooth skin. She will be dealing with scars for a while but keeping breakouts in check is half the battle. She is still on Yasmin and 50 mgs of spiro. I posted this last Sept. and by Noveraber I could see that she was so much better and now, in Feb. it's even better.
