I am a chronic pain patient who is tapering off my narcotic pain medication. Within a week, I completely stopped my 100mg daily dose of Oxycodone. I felt no negative side effects. This was encouraging, and I thought the taper from my long-acting morphine (Kadian) would not be too bad.

Well, 3 days ago I started my taper. I went from 160mg of Kadian to 120mg. I have been at 120mg for the past 3 days. I the first two days I had very little engery and had very minor flu like symptoms. Today, all of that seems to be much better, but now i have the WORST bathroom problem ever!! I cannot leave my house....it is BAD!!!!!!!!

How long wil this last for? I am suppose to continue my taper in 2 days, and drop from my current 120mg down to 90mg. If my stomach is this bad now, how will it be then? It can't get better right?

Thanks

Hello jRABun,

You can expect the bathroom issues to last for the first 3-4 days of each taper BUT it does get better. Once your body gets over the initial shock of such a dramatic decrease, it won't be that bad. Imodium will definitely help.

I think you are very lucky regarding withdrawal. Drink lots of fluiRAB cause diarrhea drains the body of much needed water. Every time you go to the bathroom, you should drink a full glass of water. If you don't, you will be exhausted and dehydrated.

Good luck,
