How long do most male Betta fish live for?

My male lived for almost a year (I went on vacation and had a friend babysit him - unfortunately my friend was betta clueless) I have had other Betta up to 3 years - adding links for you to look at
 
If proper care is given, they can live 5-7 years pretty easily.

Proper care would be defined as at least a 2.5 gallon filtered and heated tank. Changing some of the water once a week. And varying his diet. If you do the above things, he will last quite some time.
