How long do I need to run my tank before I put fish in?

I'm new at fish keeping and wanted to know how long to let a 20 gallon tropical tank cycle before I put 10 baby platys in there? I put some conditioner in the water. Also I wanted to know about the right diet for my platys? What type of live foods do they eat and when do I feed... etc. Thanks!
