How long did it take to paint the 'Mona Lisa'?

I've just been having a discussion with someone...I thought it was 10 years, my cousins thought 16. I went on the internet and it said 4. Any more suggestions? Thanks :)
 
according to the internet.... Leonardo da Vinci started working on it in 1503 and spent 4 years painting it.... and left it unfinished... he then later continued to work on it for 3 years and finished it shortly before he died in 1519... so estimated 7 years spent on it
