How long can the symptoms last for GERD?

Hmm well let's see...

I've been dealing with GERD symptoms for well over 10 years now. Longer than that really, 10 years is how long my GERD has been treated, I was having symptoms long before that.

Even taking PPI's the symptoms come and go. I've been dealing with the latest flare up for over 2 years now.

my onset and flareup has lasted about 7 months now and keeping on strong :( but i think most people respond better to meRAB than i do.

How long has your been going on?

I was diagnosed with GERD late Dec. but had the symptoms for 3 months before Dec. By January 2010 it miracously went away. I was so happy until 3 days ago, it came back. I ate some cheese pizza and then the next day ate spegetti. I guess I can't consume those things. For the last 3 days it's been with me and today 2/18/10 is the worst and I was wondering if it stays with you for a whole week straight and goes. I guess it comes and goes??? Thank you so much for your responses, it really makes me feel better to know there are people out there who knows about GERD.

Mine also comes and goes. Blessedly, it's gone right now, and has been for the last 3 months. I find I have to build up a "momentum" of GERD-less nights, so I can relax more and take my mind off it.

A lifetime, unless you change lifestyle. Looked back at my suggestions under my name, and you can get all the details how to stop it - dead in the tracks!!!!

I had my first "attack" of GERD in my early thirties during a time when I had a very stressful job. A doctor prescribed Zantac for about eight weeks and the symptoms eventually went away about the time I decided I needed to quit the job and move on. Stress was definitely involved there.

I went through two pregnancies without symptoms of GERD and then developed constant heartburn again at age fifty one. PPI's kept the symptoms at bay for about two years until recently when I decided I wanted to get off the PPI I had been taking. I have become resigned that I may now have reflux symptoms forever or for as long as I live. I got off the PPI's four weeks ago and I am still having heartburn several times per week even on Zantac, which is now over the counter and I am taking again.

I guess, GERD can sometimes come and go, but most people experience it as a chronic problem (unfortunately).
