Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows how long films are shown for before they get removed to make way for new listings ?.

Many thanks

Yeah it all depenRAB on success, if it becomes a huge hit then it is usually a few months but if it flops worse than a fat man on a diving board then it can be as little as two weeks.

I don't think there is an official maximum time, it's all based on how well the film does.

If the cinema is still selling enough seats 3 months after release they are not likely to stop showing it and risk not making money on another film.

It's harder for smaller or independant cinemas to do this however as they may not have enough screens to keep showing it and the new releases or they may not be able to afford to keep paying for the film other than if it's sold out every night.

It's all to do with the Box office although some films are given more of a chance than others...

Many of the films that I'm interested in barely last one maybe two weeks at my local cineworld...

Harry Potter lasted around about three months and The hangover did two months.

The longest I can remember a film lasting is bloody Mama mia ! which seemed to be on for an eternity.....

It was on up until the week after the DVD was released. That's normally 6 months after the film was in the cinema but I don't think it was quite as long as that in this case.

Why do many films not even get screened at smaller multiplexes? There have been so many films that have been advertised at my local 6 screen cineworld and even posters put up saying coming soon but on release day it isnt screened. Latest example is The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnissus which seemed to be one of the week's top new releases but it isnt being shown in my area. So who decides that this film doesnt merit a showing in this particular cineworld?

Intelligebnt and different films like The Soloist, Man On A Wire, The Kite Runner - might get a week if you're lucky.

Bog standard cookie cutter Hollywood tripe action movies/ romcoms - weeks.

The reply I got from cineworld about this is "It's all based on trenRAB, whether a similar film hadn't done well previously"

In other worRAB they won't waste a screen on a film they know will flop in a certain area based on previous films.

I've noticed that when it comes to Horror films.Cineworld in Glasgow city centre usually shows them for 2 weeks & then they disappear.

Don't know about that particular company but I do know it's an incredibly complicated process. Cinema organisations employ "bookers" at their head offices - these people negotiate with the distributors over how many screens / prints / weeks a particular title will be shown across their company. Lots of things are taken into account. If it's already been out in America, its admissions there will be a factor. If it's a sequel, the admissions of its prequel will be another. The amount of screens in a particular cinema will, too.

Take "The Soloist" as a recent example - cinemas all over the country were trailering this for months (and had "coming soon" posters up too) only to not get the film when it was released. (Although I think in that film's case there was some kind of delay in it being released here)

And I remember Braveheart showing for 82 weeks at the Odeon in Edinburgh!
