How long after ORIF surgery on ankle can I walk???

Heres the deal..new years eve I broke my ankle and had it dislocated.

Jan 15th I had orif surgery on it... had to stay in a splint for about 3 weeks.

Feb 2nd I got my real cast on.

Feb 23rd I go back to the doctor (they didn't tell me why exactly)

How much longer will I need to be in this cast? I can't stand not being able to walk..and generally what do they do once the cast is off? Do I get an aircast? Will it take a long time to actually start walking??

Hi, everyone is differnt with their healing... Factors affect it too like smoking and nutrition and other health issues. I had ORIF in 1990 and a reconstruction in 1991. Needless to say, it was bad and involved a non-union too. I was on crutches for 9 mo. out of 12. It kept me in good shape and I learned how to drive with my left foot. I was young, 25, but this is for the rest of your life so please be patient with the healing... My ankle is now great despite all the negative things they said would be the outcome. Hang in there. I'm currently recovering from Neck fusion surgery and that is worse... I'd take the ankle again over this collar and THESE restrictions...
