How is this for a plot of a book I hope/plan to write?

I had this idea for a book while driving down the interstate. It's an apocalyptic story from one individual's perspective. I plan for it to be like War of the Worlds meets Cat's Cradle. From the very start, it's blatantly obvious there's no hope for the protagonist, which plays on the apocalypse theme. What I plan to do to set this apart from all other apocalyptic literature is that there's never any sort of direct explanation or even implied explanation of how the world comes to an end. It's not an alien invasion, not a nuclear holocaust, not any sort of global warming consequence, not the "biblical" apocalypse. Nothing like that. There's no mention to the cause.

Anyways, tell me what you think of that.
My basic questions for you are...
Would you read it based on my description of the plot?
What are the strong points of the plot?
What are the weak points?
Any other advice is openly welcomed.

Thank you for your input. I did want to say that I've heard of The Road, but I haven't ever really looked into it or the plot of it. Just to clarify that I'm not stealing any ideas.
Tenesha, I didn't exactly plan for it to be sci-fi. It was mostly going to be an exploration into human fear and desperation with a bit of satire and dark humor (like you suggested). I'd have to classify it as an adventure mystery type of book.

I think it sounds interesting- although J makes a good point, the topic has already been vaguely covered before.

This doesn't mean that you cant also make a brilliant book based on a similar subject- look at how many successful romance novels there are out there.

I think that, at the end of the day- the joy of reading a book is put down, a lot- to the style of writing. If you can create a unique style for yourself, that will set you apart from others (whether this includes narrative sections, pictures, hand-written sections, etc.) then you will be more likely to have people be drawn to your work.

I, personally probably wouldnt read this book, since Im more interested in non-fiction writing, but if you're aiming at a sci-fi oriented audience, why not try and broaden your spectrum and add in a bit of dark humor?

If this book was more than just another (in my opinion) dull sci-fi, I would be interested in it. I enjoy peoples' writing style a lot more than the plots, a lot of the time... which is probably why I particularly liked the qwirkiness of Hitchhikers Guide.
