How is theater an art?

Theater does not let the actor or actress express his/her self, so how can it be an art? It follows a script written by a writer. How does the actor or actress become to be considered as an artist?

Actors are artists because they are telling a story. Everyone has pain and hurt in their lives. If you're hurt, you would like to express your feeling somehow. Actors can express their feelings by portraying a character. They are telling everyone about the pain that they, and the character, went through. Just telling a different story. Telling emotion. How is that NOT Art?

Example. An actress has lost her father, and she's are portraying a woman who's lost a baby. She is going to bring out the pain of losing her father, all the pain and agony, trying to tell the woman's story. Though she has not lost a baby, she still has hurt. Actors bring out hurt and other emotion from their life, into their part. Thats what makes great acting.

Actors ARE expressing theirselves. Just in different ways.
