During the time when the castle was built there was a change in society feudal system. During 1100-1400 the higher up you were, the more power and freedom you had. It was impossible for people to move up the ladder of feudal system and be wealthier and more powerful. But after 1400 it became easier for people to move up ladder and be wealthier and powerful. These great changes happened mainly because of two events The black death in 1348 and Peasants’ revolt of 1381. “In June 1381, the men of Kent and Essex had risen and brought the royal government almost to its knees; the radicalism of the Peasants’ revolt may have been defeated, but attacks on nobles and the lords of the church multiplied under Richard II.” This source from the English Castle a modern history book infer that there had been uprising called Peasants’ Revolt. The Peasants Revolt of 1381 was the first popular uprising in England. The peasants were upset an unsatisfied about their way of life. They marched on London lead Wat Tyler to demand for good life. The king accepted to meet them, but peasants were fooled by king and their leader, Wat Tyler, was murdered. This source suggest that as the King was under age people didn’t follow his advice, so there have been more lack of safety and there was increase in violence towards lords. The source seems to be biased towards defensive purpose as it tells us only what was happening during that time and does not include the name of Sir Edward. This source is still useful because it tell us what was happening during the time when the castle was built, which would had lead Sir Edward to build the castle. This source suggest that the castle was built defensively because it tell us that during that time there was increase in violence and the king was underage, so as he was a knight he would have built the castle to protect the lords or to protect himself.
