How is the Cyclop's wound in the Odyssey ironic?

I want to compare Big Dan, in O brother where art thou?, to Polyphemus in that both's downfalls were ironic. Big dan being a bible salesman who was killed by a cross. Is that irony? Was Polyphemus' end ironic?
