How is the amount of money won determined in NASCAR?

In most sports, the 1st place person wins the most money then 2nd and so forth. In NASCAR, this does not seem to be the case. How are the winnings determined for any particular race and why does the 10th place person sometimes make more than the 3rd or 4th place person?
