How is that some people look better in person in real life than on camera, and vice versa for other people?

I've heard people say that some people look better in person than in real life, while others look better on camera than in real person. Assume that "camera" means video, since I know that pictures sometimes make people look really different, and that the same makeup, clothes, angles and lighting are the same, how could it be that some people look better in video than in real life while others look better in video than in real life?
