How is stereo sound encoded on CD's?

I know that compact discs use two channels to encode the music for stereo sound reproduction, but how? If the music is encoded as a single track of pits and lands, then how can there be two bitstreams necessary for stereo sound?

One more thing, I know how stereo sound is encoded on a vinyl record even though it only has one groove (but I can't seem to figure out how this method could be applied to a digital bitstream), my confusion comes from how the two simultaneous vibrations from the record don't interfere with each other. How are they sensed as being separate, and how are the two signals traveling through one wire recognized and sent to two different speakers?
