Depends on what you consider gross and how heavy your period is. It can range from just a little blood on his penis to a massive blood bath. I would suggest doing it in the shower, or at a bare minimum making sure you lay a towel down to prevent ruining your bed, furniture, carpting, or upholstry in your car.
 
its good because there is that extra lubrication but it does tend to get messy depending on how heavy your flow. it is perfectly safe though you will have to try it once just to find out if its something you want to continue
