How is it possible to become addicted to eating toilet paper?

I watched one of those addiction shows where they show different addictions that people have. One lady was addicted to eating toilet paper. How is that even possible and why would someone even start that? I mean, I doubt that it was "That toilet paper looks yummy! I think I'll try some!" Haha.. I was just wondering about that.
