...What is the role of the text ? Dante’s inferno was a revolutionary literary work, one that was written in the common tongue, and explored religious philosophy in a brave and creative way. In this way, although written in medieval times, the inferno was one of the first poems to reflect humanistic ideas of the renaissance. For centuries the general public had been under the thumb of “the Church”. The inferno reflects humanism in the renaissance by questioning the authority of the church and holding people responsible for their own choices. Dante shows us that despite circumstances, and the actions of others, infamous and commoners alike will all ultimately arrive at the same fate, and receive the same punishment when they choose to act against god, denying the gifts god has given. When written, the role of the text seems to be a simple denunciation of Dante’s enemies (i.e Roman Catholic Church, Ghibellines, Blacks). Today the Divine Comedy is extremely informative as it assists in understanding the type of thought involved in revolution that was the renaissance.

This is my response to the essay question our teacher proposed. think its ok for an intro paragraph? i cant tell.
