How is AT&T still sold out of the 3g iPhone?

Or in the case of the original iPhone, they dropped the price $200 and sales EXPLODED again for them. Just like you said, they're limiting supply, and it increases the demand.

the same reason places are still out of the nintendo wii

it's called marketing - i ordered mine from at&t...they told me 7-10 days and i got it in 3

I was just about to post the same thing. Also, I have gone to three AT&T stores and all are sold out. However, when they try to give me that "we can order one" crap I just say that I will wait until someone has them in stock. That really pisses them off for some reason. I just do not want to promote the hype, thats all.

I used to be into the whole "wait in line" crap for games and new shit that came out, but I just decided to not promote that stuff. It does not have to be like that.

they aren't withholding supplies. any businessman worth his salt will tell you that trying to manipulate the market of any given commodity is a battle that will not be won. its always better to try and sell as much as possible as fast as possible. Apple simply had no idea how popular the phone would be.

seriously
my dad got his the day we went in to switch to att. we live in the south bay area though, literally minutes away from apple headquarters. does the proximity to apple have anything to do with the supply of iphones? i see youre in boston, maybe east coast has a short supply

It doesn't increase demand - it creates a shortage in quantity supplied v. quantity demanded.

Quantity supplied does not shift the demand curve for a product.

If there is in fact a shortage, and apple is aware and hasn't corrected the issue, it could be a tactic to give the iphone some "exclusivity" and if thats the case, that could in theory increase demand.

i just called around; they usually get shipments on or over the weekend; i just decided to get rid of my instinct on a whim. called around, found a store with them in stock, had 'em hold it, and went over and got it taken care of

the apple stores around here have them, with a limit of i think, 3 per person. you might have better luck an an apple store.
