How is AT&T still sold out of the 3g iPhone?

I went to AT&T today to switch my family from Sprint. I had been debating whether or not to get the iPhone and finally decided to at the store today. The woman said "great! We'll order that for you and it should be here in 8-10 days." Uh, what? Apparently all the stores in this area are sold out of them. When someone wants one they give them the basic Nokia phone and reserve an iPhone for the customer. I ordered the 16gig one in white and apparently the white one has less demand so it should get here in 5 days.

Either way, how are there still shortages almost one month after it was released? There were plenty to go around last year when it first came out. Did they not have as many ready for this summer's launch?

Cheap Chinese knockoff? Check
Smaller screen? Check
Weaker camera? Check
Buggy software? Probably
Only 1 gig of memory? Check

and it's only $39 less than the 8gig iPhone But sure, enjoy your knockoff

Call AT&T, try and start an account directly through them over the phone. They can ship it.

Not sure if you can or not, but I was able to with Rogers here in Canada.

Nope - I can tell you that Apple and ATT are doing this on purpose(and this is straight from an ATT employee). They are limiting shipments to keep the buzz going on the Iphone. It is as simple as that. Limited quantities, means that they can keep the price of the phone at the current level.

If you notice with EVERY other phone on the market, about a month or two after release you start seeing better rebates on them and better discounts. Why, cause the market is now saturated with them since everyone purchsed it.

By limiting supply, they limit how many our out there and therefore increase the demand for the phone.

Simple supply and demand economics.

not true at all.

apple stores have plenty
the previous iphone sold great from day one and never had a rebate
people were buying the old iphone up until apple sold out
apple rarely discounts products

Bullshit

Apple stores do not have plenty. That is why they still have lines and they assign all the phones they receive for the day by 9:30-10am. If you are not one of the lucky ones in line early(and people are still getting there at early as 6am), you ain't getting shit.

If you live in some Podunk town, then yeah maybe your store has them available cause everyone there is broke as hell and can't afford it, but if you go into almost ANY major city around say 4pm and ask to buy an iPhone, I guarantee you they will say, nope sorry, we have none.

Doesn't mean you can walk in anytime and get one that same day. Most stores still have lines for them. Whatever stock they have they sell the same day. I'm sure they also get daily shipments as well.
