I was wondering how different cartridges and bullets are measured. Let's take the familiar 7,64 cartridge for an example. These are the specs;
Case typeRimless, bottleneck
Bullet diameter7.24 mm (0.285 in)
Neck diameter7.95 mm (0.313 in)
Shoulder diameter10.80 mm (0.425 in)
Base diameter11.85 mm (0.467 in)
Rim diameter11.95 mm (0.470 in)
Rim thickness1.30 mm (0.051 in)
Case length64.00 mm (2.520 in)
Overall length84.00 mm (3.307 in)
The number 64 is probably case length, but what's with number 7? Maybe a round off on bullet diameter?
The M43 cartridge is often called 7,62x39mm or lets take 7,92x57 Mauser or 7,62x51 NATO etc. but what's up with 7,64? Shouldn't there be another number added to the 7,64? I don't quite understand, would appreciate if someone could explain all this to me.
