How is a book written? Does the author have to type it all up? How does it get sold...

...in large retailers? I am considering writing a book about my economic views and how I believe government depressions and recessions can be overcome. I have taken notes on my ideas and have developed a rather large pile of papers and would like to turn it into a book.

Where do I start?
