How important is it to take a pregnancy test with the 'first urine of the day'?

I've taken pregnancy tests before, but always with the first time I urinate in the morning, because it is recommended. This time, I want to take one, but its not first thing in the morning [though its still pretty early and I have only gone once this morning]. I am 6 days late on my period, so I'm thinking the hormone levels should be visible no matter what time of day, right?

How important is it to take a test first thing in the am? Can it cause a false positive or make the test invalid, or is it just a suggestion?
