How important is it that a website be in HTML?

My site is purely informational, and so I simply put 2 links on it -- one to open the PDF and one to download it. But I want good reference from Yahoo and Google search engines. I want the site to be able to be found by those who seek the information. Should I go to the trouble of making an HTML version?
