How important is an author's writing style?

When deciding to purchase a book, is the author’s style a factor? Do choose to read certain books because you like the style?

The reason I ask is because so many books seem to be, for lack of a better word, bland. By that, I mean the author’s style is virtually indistinct. It may be a good story. It maybe well written, but it has no unique personal flavor.

It seems there are few authors whose work is immediately identifiable in terms of style alone. There are so many books you could pick up and read, but if the author's name wasn’t given, you’d never know who wrote it.

Am I alone in this? Have you noticed the same thing?
