How important are extracurricular activities when applying to college?

Of course your grades are the most important factor when applying to college, but many people have good grades. Colleges want to see that you are a well-rounded person and will probably pick someone with a slightly lower GPA who is involved in a lot of extracurricular activities over someone with a little bit higher GPA with no other activities. I think your program is a good thing, but I recommend joining something else too. Sports take up a lot of time, so try something less time consuming like student government. You don't have to run for anything. Just be an active member which usually requires going to one meeting per week. That's not bad.

I make great grades and am in the 2% of my class. However, I am not involved in hardly any extracurricular activities. Every time I have tried, my grades have dropped drastically. What sort of grades do I need to make, where extracurricular activities don't matter?
I am in a special program in my school, that takes trips to various countries and takes part in different projects. Does that take the place of any "extracurricular activity"?
