Hey guys i have a 98 Grand cherokee 5.9 v8 with 121k miles on it. I bought it 6 months ago, with brand new tires and i know the viscous coupler in the 249 transfercase is bad. I noticed recently my tires seem to be rounding off in the front. which is one of the things a bad vc does.
I have the choice to buy a new VC for $300 on ebay and replace my bad one, or just buy a NP242 select trac transfercase from a 97 grand cherokee and swap out my 249. The only thing im not sure off is what would running 2WD on a a 350 lbs torque vehicle do to the rear end ? I know lots of people have done it but im concerned this will wear out my rear end. There has to be a reason Chrysler never put the 242 in the V8's.
Regardless, people online say it takes them 30 minutes to 1 hour to swap out transfercases, Is this about how long the mechanic should take ? I cant do it myself, as i live in a townhouse with an Association and i dont have the tools.
