How high should my bike idle with the choke all the way on?

It's a Ninja 250. When I start it cold and the choke is fully engaged it'll rev at 3k rpm or even somewhat higher. I tried to disengage the choke ever so slightly to perhaps get it down to 2k or so but it just ends up dying on me. It idles the way it should when it's warm. I had a motorcycle before this one but don't remember how it acted during a cold start. Is it usually for it to idle at 3k+ rpm? It's only got about 3k miles on it.
When I disengaged the choke to the point where the engine died opening the throttle wouldn't help any. So I let it idle high for a while and then started riding the bike and after a block or so I fully disengaged the choke and it ran fine.

What kinda behavior do you typically expect from a cold-blooded carbureted bike?
 
Actually I am surprised it does not idle slightly higher-like 4-5 thousand before you would knock it down. 3 grand is a little high, but if it runs right after it is warm it probably only needs the choke adjusted or the pilot cleaned out.
 
That is right on the money even my older gsxr with the choke on will sit at 3k till she gets warm. You have nothing to worry about bro!!
