How have test piots changed since the days of Chuck Yeager and the Bell X-1?

When Chuck Yeager took " Glorious Glenda " throught the sounder barrier, the world of aviationwas a lot differant. Test piolts still had to take a lot of chances, no one knew the limits of aircraft speeds or possibilites. Now in the world of computers do test pilots still face the same challenges?
