How hard should the steering be to turn the wheel on a bmw 540i sport?

I went to test drive a BMW 540iA sport model and it seemed very hard to turn the wheel. The owner said that is how the sport model is supposed to be--but I am not sure that it is supposed to be quite this hard. The steering was tight enough that I was unable to palm the wheel when making a turn. It was still very driveable, just harder to turn the wheel than I was expecting. Anyone have any experience with this car or any other bmw sport models, or even the m3 or m5?
