How hard is it to start an internet business?

I know a lot of internet businesses went under after the internet "boom" in the late nineties, but is it impossible to earn enough money to live on with a blog or similar type of website? what would it take? how much time, energy, capital, luck will be needed? are there any real success stories?
 
Yes, to earn money online PayPal is pretty much required or you won't go nowhere.

I earn money by doing offers for people on sites like freelunchroom and the like.

It's easy to start, but takes time and effort to make money.
