How good of an exercise is biking?

Will riding my mountain bike at a good pace for about an hour every day help me get in shape and lose a few pounds? I really only want to lose somewhere between 5 and 10 pounds, and tone up a bit. I don't expect or want anything drastic.

So do you think biking every day for an hour, eating decently healthy, drinking water and stretching will help me shape up a bit? Or is this plan not enough?

If it makes any difference, I do feel quite exhausted after my hour of biking, my heart rate stays up the whole time, and at times during the hour it gets pretty hard.
