How far along do you have to be to tell the sex?

I had a d&c cause the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks and I was suppose to be 8 weeks at the time of the d&c. They are going to run some test is all I was told and I was wondering if they could tell the test by the test or something? I know it was very early on but I would love to have at least that since my last miscarriage was out of the blue and we didn't get to run any test by the time the ER got around to me I had "passed" everything.
I go tomorrow for my results and 2 week check up. Im just scared to hear what I already know.
I know with a ultrasound they can tell at 20 weeks but since they removed the baby and are running test on the baby I didnt know if they could tell sooner with the test they are running?!
 
I cannot say for sure, but it seems that 6 weeks would be very early to be able to determine the gender. I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for you. I have had three miscarriages, so I totally understand your pain. What you went through is very traumatic, and my heart goes out to you. I wish you the best...
