How exactly does the law of attraction work, and how can I become a firm believer in it?

I understand you must fully believe in the law of attraction for it to successfully work for you. I need to know how I can make myself believe the system is true, and what exactly is the system? Thanks.
I haven't watched the movie, I will soon. I've been reading on it and already know enough to get the hang of it but I'd like some reassurance.
 
The law of attraction is based on nothing more than observational bias. Much like dowsing, when one ignores all the failures and sees only the successes ... one attributes them to some perceived process through coincidence, but not necessarily having any actual causative relationship.

Dowsers, when faced with 1 out of 6 pots full of water, on average achieve a 1/6 success rate - no better than random guess work - and therefore, any perceived "dowsing process" is no better than random guess work and is therefore superfluous and a result of the minds "desire" for causal relationships to explain the apparent successes.
 
The law of attraction is just to visualize things as you want them. Then you go and work on how to get there. Most people think that visualizing is all they need do, but it does not work that way. I read The Secret and found it tailor made for American or Anglo money grubbers. If you just sit and think that a million dollars will just fall into your lap from nowhere, it is just not going to happen, but working towards a dream that may eventually turn into a million dollar business is something tangible you can work on.
