how effective is international law in protecting human rights?

ummm i'd prefer unbiased answers :P
and objective ones at that. look at the question as if you don't belong to one part of the world but to all of it.
 
It has been useful in protecting only those in modern countries with a free press. It has obviously failed miserably in the Muslim world, North Korea, most of Africa and much of South America.

Perhaps there needs to ba a re-assessment of the various groups "powers" since it seems the only effect they seem to have is in attacking Western countries.
