im wondering how pan pipes work
why does the pitch get higher when its shortened and gets lower when lengthened
how does the length affect wavelegnth

The formula is:

TL = (S/F) / 4

Where:
TL = "theoretical length" of the pipe
S = speed of sound,
F = the desired frequency (in Hertz.)

Due to air compression within the pipe, the actual length
must be a little shorter than the theoretical length.

The three standard methods of getting the precise pitch are:
Adjustable stops,
Tapered pipes and
Putting small objects in the bottom of the pipe.
