how does this assylum seeking business work?

a friend of mine from ghana says she needs to seek assylum. she says she cannot go back home because she has no where to go - she asked for my confirmation on if it was the right move, but i dont know. if she is not allowed to stay what happens? will she stay or go? there were stories about people getting arrested. i don't think it's a good idea, personally. but if u could help me understand perhaps i'll help her make the right choice. thnx
